Castle 4 - Hwaryeongjeon

Another structure ... Hwaryeongjeon. This place was built to enshrine a portrait of King Jeongjo in a military uniform, following his demise on 28th June in 1800. The name of "Hwa Ryeong Jeon" is made with separately quoted words from Hwa-seong and Gwi-Ryeong-Bu-Mo in the Book of Poetry, one of the Three Classics of Ancient China. Hwaryeongjeon means "Return to pay respects to parents". King Sunjo (son of King Jeongjo) had visited to pay his respects and held sacrificial rites whenever he visited Hyeollyungwon and Geonneung during the Chosun Dynasty. The portrait was restored again in 2005. The shrine consists of jeongjeon (a place for enshrining the portrait of King Jeongjo), lancheong (a place for storing the portrait during emergencies, such as floods or fires. Jaesil (a waiting room for government officials who had cleansed themselves for sacrificial rites), and Jeonsacheong (a place where the officials were on their duties for the rite).
