Mae Sai Border Check Point

One interesting thing about Mae Sai is it is the point of Thailand-Myanmar border. Mae Sai is the northernmost district of Thailand and is adjacent to Tachileik town in Myanmar. Both localities are separated by the Sai River which marks the border there. Tourist from Malaysia (and also other nations) can enter Burma through Mae Sai but it requires entry-visa. The visa can be arranged right at the entry check point here with payment of USD10.

Extract from Star - maesai:

Visitors must carry Bath or US dollar in cash for all their anticipated needs (which, apart from domestic air fares or top-end hotels, are likely to remain modest).

Change money in Tachileik rather than wait until getting to Kengtung. Neither credit cards nor traveller's cheques can be used. ENtry permits cost USD10 and allow a visit of up to 14 days. Thai handphones can be used around Tachileik, but no further.

Lonely Planet's Myanmar (Burma) guide provides detailed advice as well as canvassing the arguments for and against visiting.
