SKKU (Established 1398)
In the evening we visited Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) Seoul Campus. SKKU is the oldest university in Korea established in 1398.
This place was the center of Neo-Confucianism, the state ideology of Joseon Korea. This shrine houses tablets of great Confucian scholars of China and Korea including Confucius. The complex includes ritual space with Daeseongjeon at the center and educational space with Myeongryundang at the center. Seokjeon Daeje - ancestral rites involving the offering of meat with accompanying ritual music and dance - is performed every February and August. Soekjeon Daeje is a comprehensive work of art featuring instrumental music, song, and dance. It is a very unique and important aspect of Korean cultural heritage.
