City Observatory - Calton Hill

Satu lagi tarikan di Calton Hill adalah City Observatory. Malangnya ia tidak dibuka untuk pelawat. Masuk adalah dengan kebenaran yang perlu dipohon lebih awal. Apa yang sempat dilakukan semasa di sana hanyalah bergambar di luar premis berkenaan.

Menurut laporan berikut CO kini telah diubahsuai menjadi Art Gallery dan akan dibuka kepada awam - Baca "New art gallery and revamped Observatory ready to open on Edinburgh's Calton Hill". source - heraldscot Nov 2018.

The City Observatory on Calton Hill was main center for astronomers until 1896 when it was decided to move to Blackford, due to light pollution in the city center spoilling the view of the night sky.mmm

Edinburgh's City Observatory, also known as the Playfair Observatory, is a fascinating place, where the optimism and excitement of early scientific advances can still be felt. Ispired by a Greek temple of the Four Winds, the Observatory was designed by William Henry Playfair in 1818.

The first astronomer Royal to work in this building was Professor Thomas Henderson, appointed 1834, who had discovered how to measure parallax and the distance to a star while in his previous job in South Africa.
