Why there is a gun?

The "gun" at 1881 Heritage in Hong Kong is a historic relic, a three-pounder Hotchkiss quick-firing gun, that was part of the Marine Police Headquarters. It was used to signal various events, including the approach of typhoons. It's now a part of the historical context of the site. The site's role in both signaling and its connection to the Marine Police is why it's preserved and displayed there. 

There used to be two cannons mounted on the gun platforms outside of the Main Building. The Japanese took those original guns during the Occupation years. There followed a gun swap with Jardine’s Noonday gun in 1961. The two guns now are replica replacements.
